Veteran Braisted to lead Marian Bowling Program

Bloomfield Hills, MI (November 7, 2023) – Marian High School, this week, announced the assignment of Leon O. Braisted III to the position of head bowling coach. Braisted will succeed longtime coach Dan McCleary who led the Mustangs to a 1-9-1 record in the 2022-23 season.

"Coach Braisted has proven experience managing student-athletes in pressure situations," said Mike Watson, Marian's Director of Athletics. "I'm confident that our girls will progress athletically and mentally under his leadership."

While Coach Braisted is fairly new to the high school bowling world, he is a veteran educator, coach and official. Braisted has been a middle school social studies teacher in Birmingham Schools since 1993 and possesses a BS in Elementary Education and a MA in Sports Administration – both from Wayne State University.

In addition to being a registered MHSAA official for nearly 30 years, Coach Braisted is most known for his impact in the golf community. He began his career in 1998 as a varsity girls golf coach at Birmingham Seaholm High School where he led the program for 18 years. In 2016, Leon took over the golf program at Marian, winning MHSAA titles in 2019 and 2020. During his tenure at these two schools, his teams have won 18 regional championships, five Oakland County Championships and dozens of league championships.

1998 marked the year that Leon also began as the boys head golf coach at Seaholm and served in that position for 19 years before taking the reins of the Brother Rice golf program. Braisted helped lead the Warriors to state titles in 2021 and 2022, finishing as MHSAA runners-up in Division 2 in 2023.

Combined, Braisted's girls' and boys' varsity teams have accumulated more than 4,000 wins in his career so far. Coach Braisted has received numerous honors throughout his outstanding coaching career.  He has been named the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Association (MIGCA) Coach of the Year four times, Michigan High School Coaches Association (MHSCA) Coach of the Year three times, National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Coach of the Year in 2018, National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) Coach of the Year in 2018, and was inducted into the MIGCA Hall of Fame in 2015.

"I'm looking forward to helping the girls become more skilled, more experienced and more dedicated bowlers while still having fun," Braisted commented. "We're going to compete to the best of our ability and represent Marian with pride."

The team will continue to practice and compete at Bowl One Lanes in Troy (1639 E. 14 Mile Rd). The MHSAA Bowling season opens November 9.
