February 21, 2023

ORCHARD LAKE, Mich. – Marian High School improved its record to 8-13 overall with a 50-42 non-conference win at Orchard Lake St. Mary's Prep (8-11).

The victory marked the Mustangs' fourth consecutive after missing out on the Catholic League (CHSL) Bishop Division tournament earlier this month.

The game also marked the first game between St. Mary's and Marian with the Eaglets girl's division recently opened on the Orchard Lake campus. St. Mary's currently competes in the CHSL AA Division.

In what was a seesaw affair with eight lead changes and four tied scores, St. Mary's held as much as an eight-point lead at the 5:45 mark of the third quarter.

St. Mary's Stella Poota was 5-of-17 from the floor and poured in 16 points while teammate Brooke Shockey was 5-of-10 from the floor and pulled down seven rebounds in the losing effort.

With a distinct size advantage, Marian chipped away at the Dan Heath-led St. Mary's squad.

Molly McLeod was 5-of-14 from behind the arc and scored a game-high 24 points, but it was Mckenzie Swanson with an outstanding game as well.

M. Swanson grabbed 20 boards and was 8-of-17 from the field scoring 21 points on the night.

The game was covered by The PreP as a live broadcast and the junior, Swanson was named their "G of the Game" for her efforts.

Marian will complete the regular season portion of their schedule at home against Detroit Communication Media Arts (10-9). Tipoff is 6:00 p.m. on Cicerone Court.

On February 27, Marian High School will host the MHSAA District 27 basketball tournament. Following the MHSAA seeding announcement last Sunday (Feb. 19), Marian earned the number one seed and a first round bye.

At 7:00 p.m., Bloomfield Hills High School (17-3) will face Birmingham Groves (5-16). Marian will play the winner in the second semifinal on Wednesday (Mar. 1) at 7:00 p.m. for a chance to play for a District championship.
