Sailing squad ends fall season with 6th place finish

November 15, 2023

SPRING LAKE, MI – The Brother Rice/Marian sailing team finished the 2023 fall season off with a 6th place finish at the Turkey Leg Regatta in Spring Lake on November 4.

The Turkey Leg each year is meant to be a celebration of the fall campaign with teams competing from Michigan and as far away as Wisconsin and Minnesota.

"It was a great finish from a very young team again competing against mostly upperclassmen from well-established schools and teams," remarked Greg DeGrazia, Marian sailing parent coordinator.

Freshmen Erin DeGrazia and Sophia Yancey joined sophomore Claire Fagan on the team this fall and along with their Brother Rice counterparts, were very competitive. In fact, the 6th place finish in Spring Lake on the last day of the fall season was the highwater mark for the combined team, but the team took a huge jump in competitive level.

One of the best experiences was qualifying for the Midwest Championships at Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago. While the team finished dead last, it was set against some of the best teams in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Minnesota.

The team will resume with the spring season in March. Contests will be scheduled as they are confirmed.
