BLOOMFIELD HILLS – For the second consecutive year, the Marian High School athletic department has released its Athletics Year-in-Review report.

The comprehensive 28-page document provides a recap of activities and achievements during the 2022-23 school year.

Included are several notable achievements including two MHSAA team state championships (volleyball, swimming and diving) as well as four Catholic League team championships (soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, skiing). Ten individual state championships were earned by Marian athletes as well.

Individual athletic achievements were also outstanding during the 2022-23 school year. Marian athletes earned 24 all-state first-team awards and two athletes were consensus All-Americans in their sport.

Overall, more than 75% of all Marian students participated in at least one sport during the school year including over 90% of freshmen.

Two programs averaged over a 4.0 cumulative grade point average (sailing, pompon) and 17 of Marian's 18 athletic programs averaged over a 3.5 GPA.

On the coaching side, Dave Eichenhorn was named Division 3 state swim & dive coach of the year following his first season while volleyball head coach Mayssa Cook was a candidate for national coach of the year, winning a national regional coach of the year award. Soccer's Reid Friedrichs was also named district coach of the year by his peers following a 15-2-2 season.

"The 22-23 athletic year will be remembered as one of the most successful in Marian history," stated Mike Watson, director of athletics. "Not only were our student-athletes successful on the fields, courts and pools, but most importantly, they were outstanding academically and grew as young women."

The 2023-24 athletic calendar kicks off next Monday, August 7 with the beginning of practices and tryouts for cross country, swim & dive, field hockey, volleyball and golf.
